Humph journeyed to Canada to appear at a local jazz festival in 1983 and Sackville's John Norris took the opportunity to record him with Scottish ex-pat Galloway and a top Canadian rhythm section. Norris having since died, his Sackville label is now owned/handled by Delmark in Chicago and it is down to them that this facsimile reissue has come about. All eight pieces on the album are by Humph, some freshly minted, others dating back to the 1950s. Humph was always an underrated composer: all of these tunes have merit and the band does them proud. Galloway, who died recently, was something of a star in Canada and built a fine career over there, also journeying regularly to Britain and Europe. As will be no surprise, the two men dovetail beautifully, Humph mostly muted as Galloway takes turn and turnabout with his various horns, although it's his soprano that stays best in the mind's ear. ‘It's A Thing’ is the opener, a perky riff with the soft swing of the piano-less rhythm section uppermost, Humph muted on a long, linear solo as Galloway's soprano curves in, Bickert adding class, limpid and relaxed. And so it goes throughout this engaging encounter, Humph swapping to clarinet, as was his wont, on the creole-style ‘Caribana Queen’ and Galloway playing chewy baritone on the aptly titled ‘Sprauncy’. Stress-free and creative: what's not to like?
