In 2006 Ibrahim Maalouf stepped out at the New Morning in Paris to make his debut onstage appearance as leader. Ten years later comes this album celebrating a decade of live concerts from the French-Lebanese trumpeter, although the nine performances here were all recorded in 2013 and later. Maalouf has built up an enthusiastic following for his brand of variously soulful, funky, gritty contemporary jazz, an enthusiasm that's well captured on these live tracks. The intense 10-minute ‘Red & Black Light’ and 15-minute ‘Nomade Slang’ have the crowd singing and clapping along, while the appearance onstage of the octogenarian Juliette Gréco – for whom Serge Gainsbourg originally wrote the tune – midway through a 2014 performance of ‘La Javanaise’ at the Olympia in Paris has the audience in raptures. (The DVD contains a further five tracks, three of which are taken from 2011 and 2012, and includes previously unreleased tracks such as ‘Qabu’ and ‘Jamal’.)
