Following her 2011 ACT release The Gospel Truth, which paid fulsome homage to the dual influences of gospel and soul on her own music, Swedish jazz singer Ida Sand focuses her gaze on legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young on this hugely impressive 13-track collection. What impresses most about Young At Heart is the way in which Sand makes the songs entirely her own: album opener ‘Cinnamon Girl’ and other classics such as ‘Harvest Moon’ and ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’ sound like they might have been written especially for her, such is her complete identification with Young's music. In addition to the title track from Young's 1992 release Harvest Moon, there's the poignant protest songs ‘War Of Man’ and 1970's storming ‘Ohio’, both absolute standouts. Ever alert to Young's lyrical intentions, Sand taps into the rich seam of melancholy that runs throughout the Canadian's oeuvre, in beautifully nuanced performances.
