If had a brief but impactful career, perhaps best remembered these days as an early vehicle for saxophonist Dick Morrissey. Ironically, however, he features here as much on flute, channelling Roland Kirk, whose influence at the time (stand up, Ian Anderson) cannot be underestimated.
If took their lead from Blood, Sweat & Tears, including the spectacular vox of John ‘JW’ Hodkinson, which the BBC's sound engineers evidently found tricky to harness. The performances are culled from seven broadcasts with some repetitions of songs, reflecting that If didn’t have the biggest of repertoires, but they compensated with a boggling energy, epitomised by Smith's roller coaster, many styled, guitar attack. Never having the jazz chops or rock heft of the mighty Colosseum, or as genuinely innovative as Jack Bruce's bands, If went their inevitable separate ways. TV buffs though, will always be intrigued that the great Trevor Preston (who wrote Ace of Wands and Out) penned many of their lyrics.
