On his third album recorded under the moniker Indigo Kid, the young guitarist-composer Dan Messore continues to hone a singular path. He demonstrates a fluid approach to improvisation: able to convincingly manoeuvre between his influences, that range from the folk guitarist John Fahey through Lionel Loueke to contemporary titans Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell. Messore keeps effects to a minimum, preferring a natural, warm electric sound. In this respect he shares a common ground with jazz guitarists closer to home: on Moment Gone in the Clouds Messore reveals something of one-time Babel recording artist Phil Robson’s warm yet crunchy comping style and also of the underrated ex-Loose Tubes guitarist John Parricelli, who was his mentor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in the early noughties. Messore, on this new album, has decided on a change of sonic scenery with sax (previously played by Iain Ballamy and Trish Clowes) replaced by flute (Gareth Lockrane). While Lockrane and Messore have a good understanding, more could be done to retain the strong character of Messore’s breezily attractive melodies through the improvised sections.
