There remains something splendidly old school about this still young trio. They play with a raw toned directness rare among their sometimes over-schooled contemporaries. The obvious model is Tony Williams' Lifetime, notably the pre-Bruce version. Cuts such as ‘Alpha Dog’, or the cutely titled ‘Wonderfall’, rage and buck with abandon. Other influences leak through, be it openly as in the nod to Zappa, ‘Frank'll Fix It’, or less obviously in ‘Doozy Mugwump Blues’, with its William Burroughs' title. But this trio doesn't live in the past, they inhabit every moment of now with their intense ‘live in the studio’, undubbed sound. Powell's surge and swell is reminiscent of Larry Young yet has its own vibe and is the perfect foil to that filthy guitar sound. Jacob Young, as a Norwegian, can hardly avoid the Terje Rypdal comparisons, but it's a mantle he wears with ease.
