The roots of this Scandinavian group lie in a trio dedicated to the music of Don Cherry; it was the 2008 addition of Swedish trumpeter Magnus Broo that turned them into IPA. Broo also plays with Håker Flaten in Atomic, and the bassist, in turn, is, of course, one-third of The Thing. That trio, like Atomic, have laid brutal waste to the “Nordic tone” stereotype, combine the blistering brutalism of European free jazz exponent Peter Brötzmann with the fire music of African-Americans like Archie Shepp. IPA do not play free improv: a composer – either Broo or Nymo – is credited for each of the seven tunes. But despite its title, It's A Delicate Thing has much of the same rowdy, rambunctious spirit. Yet it's also a varied listen, being at other times ruminative, even rueful, and perhaps even other words not beginning with R, grooves and melodies emerging from and sinking back into apparent chaos.
