A series of conversations across the generations: pianist Schweizer a legend of European free jazz, while saxophonist Wickihalder represents the next generation. They share a love of Thelonious Monk and Steve Lacy, the latter something of a mentor to Wickihalder, discussing music (‘a matter of life and death’) on summer walks around Paris. Yet these duets seem to visit earlier as well as more recent periods in jazz history, with neoclassical deviations, to create something brightly original. At moments languidly lyrical, at others jaunty and/or jagged, this collection takes in standards (‘Tinkle Trinkle’, ‘Just A Gigolo’) as well as original material; in both categories, the musicians move effortlessly from the abstract to the acutely focused. The sense is of musicians with nothing to prove, certainly true in Schweizer's case, working together to create bracing and beautiful chamber jazz. Superb.
