Third Stream music ain't what it used to be – it's so much better, so much more organic, as if practitioners in the once sharply-differentiated musical sectors now automatically think of themselves as sharing the same sound world. That's the impression I get at any rate from this quartet of interlinked compositions written by pianist/harpist Iro Haarla for symphony orchestra and jazz quintet. ‘Songbird Chapel’ is dedicated to Haarla's opera-singer mother; ‘Persevering with Winter’ is an allegorical evocation of the long Northern winter; the journey from darkness into light similarly plays a part in the final two compositions, ‘… And The Darkness Has Not Overcome It…’ and ‘Ante Lucem – Before Dawn’, which is a description of the Passion, beginning in the Garden of Gethsemane on Holy Thursday and ending with the Resurrection on Easter Monday. It's big, reflective, redemptive music, with lots of space for lyrical, rich solo sax work from Haarla's regular quintet collaborator Trygve Seim.
