New York-based, Brazilian-born saxophonist Ivo Perelman's last pre-Covid date in London brought him together with several local singers and string players, and this meeting with the Arcado Trio provides a loose but apt transatlantic counterpart. As he points out in the booklet the horn player was once a guitarist and cellist, which makes any affinity to fretboard and catgut clear enough, but the bond that exists between him and his accompanists is as much in improvisatory nouse as it is a sensitivity to timbre.
Over four mostly lengthy pieces the quartet is as enviably flexible in structure as it is daring in resonance, with both elements fitting into what could be termed a Perelman modus operandi without reducing it to a formulaic rundown. Role reversals are also effective. The big saxophone has a suitably light, almost willowy tone on occasion while Mark Feldman's small violin is a snarling, explosive presence in moments when the music is at its most adrenalin-fuelled. Yet the alternations of whirlwind collective rhythm, with the strings creating a rugged country blues à la Jenkins and Wadud and ambiguous soundscapes where the urgency of a siren or whistle is evoked, make this music that is pleasingly resistant to category, especially that of chamber music. It sounds more like an open air jam than a drawing room recital.
