You really want to like this album. After all, there are foremost fusioneers on board, like Peter Erskine (Weather Report) and Matthew Garrison (Joe Zawinul’s Syndicate); and it’s mastered by the master Scott Kinsey. The concept’s interesting too, with Magnusson setting up free sessions with Erskine et al alongside a gamut of Icelandic musicians, some recruited from the Sugarcubes (and what a coup it would have been to bring in Björk herself, but alas, it was not too be). And Magnusson is an intriguing character too; musician, scientist, diplomat and green activist.

It’s a heady brew which possesses moments of bravura: ‘Wild Card’ has echoes of Cobham’s Spectrum, and intriguing vox. Indeed, Gisla’s vox startle throughout. ‘Space Pasadena’ reeks with cosmic world beats, with a big Zawinul feel, while ‘Dreams of Delphi’ has a Wayne Shorter styled sax solo that’s more Shorter than Shorter. Indeed, it almost tips over into pastiche; it’s one thing to honour your heroes but if you aren’t able to build on the foundations of the greats and shape your own sounds, it’s a hollow achievement. Live may be different though, and it’s fascinating to think where Magnet may yet voyage.
