Last summer's Meraki release demonstrated Yorkshire-born pianist Jacky Naylor's compositional flair, on an album influenced more than a smidge by Phronesis and Shai Maestro, The Industrial Suite shifts focus – a set of compositions for sextet with echoes of Kenny Wheeler and Niels Klein, it's structured around a narrative derived from stories of the mill towns around which he was brought up. The suite's redemptive arc (from ‘Workshop of the World’ through a ‘War of Attrition’ to an eventual, gentrified ‘Rebirth’) is a little on the nose, and can restrict at times, where compositions serve to justify the story rather than exploding out of their structural shackles, In the freer sections though, there are plenty of impressive moments, The simple structure and reduced forces of ‘The Last Mill’ gives Naylor, Will Sach and Luca Caruso space to breathe and reflect, Watch out for Naylor's inventive work over the coming years.
