A re-issue of a Japanese concert that's not always been easy to find, so doubly welcome in that it captures Pastorius in his prime, backed by an extraordinary agglomeration of musicians principally aimed at pitching the bass man into the superstar arena. The range of musics reflect both Pastorius' extraordinary eclectic taste and how ‘jazz’ was packaged to a wider audience at the time. So we have the tribute to Shorter, ‘Elegant People’, done now with rattling pans and a big band shabazz worthy of Quincy Jones, contrasting with the enigmatically ‘classical’ re-arrangement of ‘Amerika’. But then in blurts the rollocking but kinda throwaway ‘Pac Man Blues’. And because of the constraints of vinyl, (and this a straight re-package of the original) there's just 49 seconds of the Evans/Miles song ‘Eleven’. Like so much of Jaco's recorded output, Twins II is partial, intimating what might have been, but, hey, let's celebrate what there is.
