This LP from composer Anderskov, a project inspired by Maurice Maeterlinck’s classic 1901 essay La Vie des Abeille (The Life of the Bee) is long-windedly – if appropriately – subtitled “Swarming tracks for 10 improvising musicians”; and so it proves: massed flutes and clarinets scuttle and circle in a musical hive-mind, with a buzzing cello and clattering percussion adding to the organic, sometimes nebulous feel. Like a Pollock painting (or indeed a beehive), this music at first appears chaotic, but on closer investigation reveals intriguing structures and patterns that give the four pieces (‘Birds’, ‘Bees’, Bats’ and the side-long ‘Bugs’) real heft, particularly on repeated listens.
The spirit of Anderskov’s sonic hive resides not with the composer-conductor, or the individual musicians; but with their collective animus, all pulling together in the purpose of improvised, collectivist music-making.
