Here's a delicious meeting of spirits: irrepressible and ridiculously young Dane pitched in with the surreally iconic drummer, Louis Hayes. Hayes, what, 83 now? had already enjoyed several legendary careers before Artved was even born, but there's nothing here that smacks of two talents shoved together for the sake of a promoter's purse.
Recorded at Copenhagen's Montmartre, (even the old Montmartre is over 20 years younger than Hayes) during last year's splendid festival, the two of them go at it like knives, not least on the opening shots of ‘Exodus’. The Victor Feldman bop warhorse is given a thorough shakedown, at times only held together by the bass/piano diligence. Artved has a sharp tone that isn't always attractive, but in this live context it helps him cut through, and he needs to, given the velocity and drenching cymbal work of Hayes. Artveld can take it down though, as on the lyrical ‘Nelia’ dedicated to his drum playing girlfriend whom one trusts isn't jealous of her partner's rhythmic intimacy with Hayes. But it's the dramatic blues of Feather's ‘I Remember Bird’ or the pacy fun and dash of ‘Dumbo’ that the punters most obviously appreciate.
