On this, his third album for ECM, the Norwegian guitarist Jacob Young is joined by saxophonist Trygve Seim, whom he has known since childhood and here making his 13th appearance on an ECM album, plus the Marcin Wasilewski Trio (Trio from 2005, January from 2008 and Faithful from 2011 – all on ECM). Young provides all 10 compositions that comprise the album, which are much more than the usual compositional copout of a basic theme intended to set mood, tempo, key and harmonic structure. Melodies are expressed, inverted, extended and extemporised by Seim, Young and Wasilewski who unite in creating moods that are strangely haunting – for example ‘Theresa's Gate’ – but whether it be the understated, moody rock feel of ‘Bounce’ or the engaging N'awlins feel of ‘Sofia's Dance’ there is a unified approach to the music making – this is not two lead voices in Young and Seim plus the Wasilewski trio all doing their thing, but five musicians pulling together, sublimating ego to achieve a greater whole.
