This garishly green and sparklingly lettered limited edition triple vinyl box set (and four track download) package is something of a double celebration of both the 20th anniversary of this most remarkable and unusual of Norwegian bands and their startling and still fresh debut, A Livingroom Hush. Although their first EP appeared in 1996 – the now hard to find Jævla Jazzist Grete Stitz – their first fully-formed album came together in the studio thanks to producer Jørgen Træen's sonic manipulations with frantic drum ‘n’ bass opener ‘Animal Chin’ owing no small debt to electronica icon Squarepusher's 2001 album Go Plastic; its stuttering beats and grungy distorted breakdown a heady studio concoction. Newly revived here as a slab of transparent 180gram vinyl the music positively leaps out of the speakers – Træen's deeply layered production emphasising the breathiness of the horns, throb of the house-quaking bass, shimmer to the vibes and visceral gnarly grit of the wilder sonic interludes. The music has aged incredibly well, setting out composer/multi-instrumentalist/bandleader Lars Hornveth's omnivorous mix of big band jazz, Afrobeat grooves, widescreen soundscapes, surging prog-rock riffs and sizzling electronica, all lashed to emotive themes that lift the music beyond the realms of mere experimentation. While the accompanying pair of 12” remixes of more recent material culled from their wildly successful 2012 live collaboration with Britten Sinfonia may be a way for a new generation of jazz-dance heads to connect with Jaga, A Livingroom Hush's urgent musical headrush should easily find its way back to discerning dancefloors and turntables everywhere.
