This is may be Jaga's eight album, but it also represents their debut on LA's Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. But that doesn't mean they've come under the spell of Lotus himself, Kamasi Washington or Thundercat since the album had been recorded and mixed before their deal with the label went through. As on past albums, there's not a great emphasis on solos (as opposed to the band's live performances which are replete with them), but this album is nevertheless quite different to anything they have done before, yet still manages to retain the group's imprimatur. The emphasis is on writing and arranging, since the album is essentially orchestral in concept, and the development of melodies and motifs using extended forms. There may be just four tracks on the album, but they are well-conceived and constructed, with well-arranged ensemble textures that balance acoustic and electronic sounds in varying densities that can sometimes make the ensemble sound four times its size.
Highlights are ‘Tomita’ with Lars Horntveth's extended tenor sax intro, and the album climax, ‘Apex’ which builds and builds through dramatically paced key changes.
