Gefion – the name of the Norse goddess of ploughing, prophecy and premonition – is 36-year-old Danish guitarist Jakob Bro's debut release as leader for ECM, although devotees of the label will know his work from his sideman contributions to discs by Paul Motian and Tomasz Stańko. For this set of musical glimmers and shadows, he's joined by US bassist Thomas Morgan and veteran Swedish drummer Jon Christensen. The style could be described as ‘Nordic Frisell’. Bro concentrates on conjuring delicately chilly atmospheres, full of spectres and apparitions, or perhaps prophecies and premonitions, in keeping with the title; nothing too physically present or solidly there (not much suggestion of ploughing then). Morgan and Christensen provide wonderfully evocative, detailed support, the latter dedicating great attention to his cymbals on the likes of ‘Copenhagen’ and ‘Oktober’. Morgan's bass positively drives the trio through ‘And They All Came Marching Out Of The Woods’ – which, though hardly a marching song, certainly digs a groove and encourages mainman Bro to indulge in some speculative shimmering picking. Lovely; but ever so slightly uneventful.
