The surprise of these 1955-57 sessions is that they are essentially small band swing, plus a bit of bebop phrasing from Moody’s fellow Gillespie sidemen: Dave Burns (trumpet), Pee Wee More (baritone) and William Shepherd (trombone), but they’re consistently hard-swinging, well-arranged and a delight to listen to.
