This 20th anniversary, limited edition 2LP set represents the first time that Cullum’s Twentysomething, his major label debut and the fastest-selling jazz album in chart history, has appeared on vinyl. A judicious mix of standards (‘Old Devil Moon’), originals (‘All at Sea’) and classic rock (‘The Wind Cries Mary’), with the great Bob Dorough making it onto the track list once again (‘But for Now’), its blend of mellifluous vocals, energising pianism and youthful joie de vivre proved irresistible.
Five bonus tracks include covers of Radiohead’s ‘High And Dry’, the Pharrell Williams hit, ‘Frontin’, and ‘Everlasting Love’, famously featured on the soundtrack to the 2004 romantic comedy film, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. As on his 2002 debut album for Candid, Pointless Nostalgic, Cullum receives exceptional support from bassist Geoff Gascoyne and drummer Sebastiaan de Krom (drummer Michael Strange plays on four tracks). Textures are nicely varied thanks to an impressive cast of top UK jazzers that includes guitarist John Parricelli, sax players Alan Barnes, Ben Castle and Jamie Talbot, plus trumpeter/flugelist Martin Shaw.
