Since he began his relationship with RareNoiseRecords, Jamie Saft has come up with a series of well crafted, conceptually original albums that, though not quite creating waves, are gradually building a following for his work among the musically curious. Hidden Corners is a great example. Taking the theme of spiritual jazz unveiled by the likes of Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane and taken up by messengers on the Black Jazz, Strata East, Tribe, Nessa, Muse and Prestige labels, Saft explores the concept of conjuring mystical moods through the medium of music. Few (if any?) saxophonists have a better understanding of Coltrane's and Pharoah Sanders' music than Dave Liebman and few drummers are better qualified to get into the heart of this music than master drummer Hamid Drake. Add bassist Bradley Jones and Saft to the mix and they create music that is both their own yet captures the essence of the whole spiritual jazz thing. Given prominence by the rising of Kamasi Washington's star, Saft's response is deeper and more memorable.
