North meets South on this warmly restrained, coolly passionate album from Sweden’s Jan Lundgren and Brazil’s Yamandu Costa, who first performed on stage together in Stockholm in early 2023 and liked what resulted sufficiently enough to book some studio time. It’s piano meets guitar, too – not always the easiest of duo partners but here intertwining with graceful mutual understanding, as lines jump from one instrument to the other, now excitably echoing and chattering (‘Para Aprender a Amar’), now twinkling and stately (‘Nina’). Latin American and European traditions blend seamlessly across the 14 tracks, most of which have been composed and contributed by Lundgren and Yamandu individually, but the pair also draw on the resources provided by hallowed musical peers from their respective countries: so we have Jobim’s ‘Garoto’, two pieces by Brazilian guitarist and composer Luíz Bonfá (‘Uma Prece’ and ‘Manha de Carnaval’) and ‘Nocturne’ by the Swedish troubadour Evert Taube. Then there’s ‘Summer Kind of Love’, which Lundgren wrote with his wife, singer Hannah Svensson.
