All the players on this disc are Scandinavian – saxophonist Jukka Perko hails from Finland, drummer Morten Lund is Danish, and bassist Dan Berglund and ivory-fingering leader Jan Lundgren are both Swedes – but the set takes its name from the iconic square in Berlin for the very good reason that that's where the quartet decamped to when they recorded it, with Siggi Loch serving as their producer. They make a recognisably European sound, with a flavoursome dash of Nordic tone to the fore, but pianist Lundgren is also deeply rooted in American jazz. He provides 10 of the 11 tunes here, including the title track, which gets proceedings underway in amiable, upbeat fashion, and the coolly splendid, swinging ‘Lycklig Resa’, which has more than a hint of Dave Brubeck in his pomp about it. ‘Bullet Train’ is a hazy adrenalin rush, while ‘The Poet’ boasts gorgeous, yearning piano lines that abound with Nordic melancholy.
