In 2003 Jana Herzen, a singer-songwriter who honed her talents early in coffee houses and folk clubs, founded the Harlem-based label Motéma Music, which has served as home to the likes of Geri Allen and Gregory Porter; it released Porter's debut album, Water, in 2010. Herzen also signed the virtuoso bassist Charnett Moffett and they have since struck up a rather wonderful musical partnership. They began recording together ahead of Passion of a Lonely Heart (2012), the sessions for which produced 11 more jazz-oriented tracks that appeared on that album, and 11 of a more singer-songwriter type, reflecting Herzen's repertoire in her coffee-house days. These are the tunes that appear here in a characterful mixture of covers and originals. The Beatles' ‘Blackbird’, Men at Work's ‘Land Down Under’ and ‘Rainbow Connection’, made famous by Kermit the Frog, all appear. The performances are beguilingly unshowy and modestly compelling. ‘Round the World won't change the world, but it may brighten the place up with its quiet charm and optimism.
