When this relatively recent Los Angeles-based label began releasing CDs, a large number featured Hammond B3-players, including one who'd been around for quite a while but never as a leader. Jared Gold has turned out to be one of Posi-Tone's most important discoveries. Not as blues-based as the Jimmy Smith school, but much more advanced harmonically, his two most important influences are probably Larry Young and the long-forgotten brilliant hard-bopper Don Patterson. This is Gold's most exciting CD so far. The instrumentation recalls Young's Blue Note classics with Woody Shaw or Lee Morgan, Joe Henderson or Herbert Morgan on tenor, with Eddie Gladden on drums. There's a really raw, robust vibe throughout the album with lots of chances taken which really came off. Gold's harmonic sophistication, plus the highly-charged nervous energy in his comping and solos, for this writer at least, gives him the edge over such talented contemporaries as Sam Yahel, Garry Versace or Larry Golding. Both horn players, each with loads of leader-dates under their belts, really get down and dirty on all the tracks, with excellent emotive hard-hitting, edgy solos. All the tunes (clever titles, by the way) are interesting. Gold brought in five (including the somewhat mysterious ‘Saudades’), Bowen, Rotondi and brew-stirring drummer Davis (his is one of the most challenging) one apiece. Jared Gold has come up with a record that will still sound exciting in twenty years time. Don't wait till then to hear it!
