Most of Posi-Tone's recent releases have comprised what were probably leftovers from unissued 2009 sessions featuring mostly saxophone players that we’ve never heard of in the UK. All very competent, but hardly ones to set our pulses racing. However things are on the mend now with new Marc Free-produced dates by Orrin Evans and Ralph Bowen (see reviews on pages 37 and 38) – and this, the fifth album as leader by arguably Free's most important ‘discovery’, the excellent, energetic, free-wheeling organist Jared Gold, whose influences include the Coltrane-inspired Larry Young, Jack McDuff and the underrated Don Patterson. Jared makes everything sound so easy, but has an excellent technique combined with a great feel for grooves, suitably supported here by guitarist Cherry and drummer Davis. The material includes covers of songs by Sam Cooke (his ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ is taken at medium rather than deeply down tempo), Johnny Nash, Jimmy Webb and Duke Ellington (whose ‘In a Sentimental Mood’, again, gets a swing rather than ballad treatment) plus five loose-limbed Gold originals. Not his most arresting record perhaps, but one that brings a good feel to any occasion.
