The youngest Marsalis brother is better known as a drummer, but being a member of that multi-talented family it should surprise nobody that he also plays pretty good vibraphone too. On a blindfold test you’d figure him for a full-time vibes specialist, for his touch is sure, his sound is warm (suggesting Milt Jackson’s slow vibrato) and his boppish articulation clean as a whistle, even at speed. From here it’s a short step to the rest of the mallet section, where we find him doubling expertly on xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel and tubular bells. All at once, too, as on the multi-tracked novelty, ‘My Joy’. The young trio behind him is excellent without being astonishing on a quartet session, which is unpretentious and enjoyable. Some tracks are quite sophisticated, others almost too simple, but each of the leader’s originals conveys a contemporary New Orleans vibe, with distinctive touches of blues and good humour. One track, for instance, finds Jason artfully scat-whistling an entire theme and variations, including a brilliant coda. And touchingly he dedicates the album to the memory of his hometown buddy Abram Wilson, the gifted trumpeter who made so many friends in London before his untimely death.
