This latest Candid remastered CD and LP stands up well in musical terms, with its backstory and its stylistically mixed personnel relating to the previous year’s anti-Newport happening, set up to challenge the apparent commercial excesses of the official festival.
Alongside Mingus (supported by Nat Hentoff, who supervised these studio sessions), Roach was one of the main organisers and his current group including Little is heard on ‘Cliff Walk’ with the addition of Jo Jones.
The pioneering Basieite is the sole drummer on Abbey Lincoln’s one track (‘Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do’) which has backing from Dolphy and Benny Bailey – both Lincoln and Bailey were separately featured on their own Candid albums. Jones is also present throughout the original Side One fronted by Eldridge, comprising two quartet numbers with Mingus and Flanagan plus a medium-fast blues adding Dolphy and Knepper.
The kaleidoscopic nature of the programme mirrors that of the Newport Rebel event, although several attendees such as Coleman Hawkins and Ornette Coleman are not present here, probably for contractual reasons.
The highlights of the resultant album are sufficient to justify its release and reissue, and some of the unusual collaborations are surprisingly satisfying.
