Instead of jazz scores at the movies, this is a recording of jazz interpretations of movie themes of no fixed genre. It’s the second recording by this mainstream UK repertory quintet. The concept of the band is a fertile one as they seek to cover a very broad spectrum of movie music from 1940s film noir themes through to the Sondheim’s ‘Sooner or Later’ from the 1990 film Dick Tracy. It’s led by the sassy vocalist Joanna Eden and her swinging quartet featuring the pianist Chris Ingham and Stan Getz acolyte/former Clare Teal reedsman Mark Crooks. If you’re fond of movie themes then tracks such as Burt Bacharach’s excellent Beach Boys-like ‘South American Getaway’ from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid with the boys joining in on vocals, are agreeable. Framed by a couple of Hermann-Hitchcock classics that employ Crooks’ wonderfully woody-toned clarinet, this proudly middle of the road recording delivers the goods for mainstream tastes.
