This youthful big band drawn from across the UK is part of the work of the Jazz Plus organisation, dedicated to showcasing young artists. The 18-piece line up was formed and recorded in 2019, and as well as producing some stimulating full band sounds, such as the jagged opening of the first track ‘Feel Alright Experiment’, punctuated by Tristan Bacon's energetic drums, it creates some good platforms for its soloists. Among the latter, altoist Daniel Garel stands out, with a memorable outing on a version of Madvillain's ‘Monkey Suit’, tenorist Josephine Colter fights a winning battle with the ensemble on ‘Four Court Fish’ and Matthew Sulzmann's confident and assured soprano features on ‘Inhale Exhale’, derived from NAO's 2016 R&B record. Vocalist Laura Paul is slightly lost in the mix on that latter track, but she is featured on the Latin piece ‘Esse Passaro Chamado Tempo’ both in a slightly effects-heavy opening chorus and on a fine scatted chorus, that could have been longer, before she is crowded out by David Sear's trombone. The album has enthusiasm in droves despite some occasionally rather ragged full band sections, but what comes across is joie de vivre and some refreshing experiments – both in terms of source material and Chris Jones's arrangements – that seek to explore some slightly different directions for a band of this size.
