The 12 tracks in this left-field mix of orchestral blast and chamber music subtlety include the waltz ‘Robins in Snow’, three subtly orchestrated duets for trumpeter Taylor Hoskins and percussion and a mini-concerto ‘Views from the Inside’. The album starts with the babble of voices and closes with the jaunty accordion theme of ‘Verrazano Bikeride’, one of five ‘Brooklyn Vignettes’. And with all but the shortest compositions mixing genres or styles, the emphasis is as much on the orchestrations as the musicianship. Sanford has a long track record as both composer and conductor, and his writing changes mood and style without becoming too bitty. There are nods to contemporary classical and big band swing, tango, funk and left-field ballad. And though fireworks are few, he gives the instrumental showcases ample elbowroom. Tom Beckham stands out on vibraphone, the three duets really sparkle and Matt Holman's trumpet solo on the opening ‘An Attempt at Serenity’ builds gracefully to a sedate but triumphant climax.
