When Jef Neve burst on the European scene with Nobody is Illegal in 2006, it seemed like a star had been born. Prodigiously gifted (he graduated with simultaneous Master's degrees in Classical Music and Jazz with distinction -ask any student how difficult it is to achieve that in just one discipline), he seemed set to challenge the ascendency of E.S.T. with his own trio that included precociously talented young drummer Teun Verbruggen. It didn't quite happen, and rather like the successful first novelist who struggles with his second book, Neve couldn't quite sustain the momentum or fulfill the weight of expectation that was now on him. Eight years on comes his first solo album, recorded in six different studios in four different countries and once again expectation exceeds delivery. Quite why this should be with this thoughtful, expansive selection of 11 performances is the $1 0million question.
