Coffin's best known for his association with the sprawling Dave Matthews Band, which mixes classic American rock with big brassy arrangements and a jamband vibe. Here, Coffin's taken it a step further, with this more jazz-oriented, instrumental incarnation featuring over 40 musicians.

Like the American plains, Only the Horizon is big: big tunes, big arrangements and a plethora of star guests. ‘Here We Go’ and ‘Yesterday's Dream’ are funky grooves as you’d expect with the likes of Victor Wooten, Daru Jones, Cory Wong and MonoNeon on board. Live such songs may be monsters; on CD they don’t quite ignite. ‘Pharoah Rise’ though is an impressively epic tribute to Sanders, with Ferreira's chanted rap dedicated to the masterful one.

Coffin's multi-sax and flute skills are impressive throughout, while his recruitment of the percussive Yeli Ensemble adds drama. But again, they get rather lost in the wave upon wave of ‘spot the guest’ solo moments.

Solos from the likes of Béla Fleck and Keb ‘Mo flare like headlights on a darkened freeway but then are gone, beyond the horizon.
