Drum-led piano trios are always a bit different. There's a unique gravitational pull to the best ones, and that's nothing to do with miking or volume, but just pulse and a heightened sense of dynamics. But it's like seeing a car come down the wrong side of the motorway if it all goes horribly wrong. They are also quite unusual. On first blush Davis, who has written all the eight tunes here and who works on the New York scene but is originally from Greeley in Colorado, is slightly diffident but it's not that, it's his style that's a bit reminiscent of the late Paul Motian's. The slack is taken up by pianist Lossing at first, but the trio empathy is quickly apparent and its abstract character, with Lossing a bit like Craig Taborn at times, quickly maintaining itself. The third track ‘Overrath’ is where the album really begins to get serious. It's good hearty fare throughout but it's a bit of a waiting game for the sparks to fly.
