Apparently inspired by mythical animals and the 1943 experimental film Meshes of the Afternoon, Meshes of Voice brings together two of Norway's finest vocalists: Susanna (formerly of the Magical Orchestra, alongside Morten Qvenild, and more recently known for her solo work and collaboration with singer-songwriter Will Oldham) and Jenny Hval (formerly known as Rockettothesky, now acclaimed under her own name and as one half of Nude On Sand). With female voices twirling around one another over chiming, shimmering, beds, these 15 tracks often feel as twinkly and fragile as a stream of ice crystals. But such frail beauty is balanced – and occasionally overwhelmed – by what could be howling winds, screeching train brakes, even the odd explosion. Mixed and mastered by Helge Sten (of Supersilent), this is an enchanting collection of songs half-buried in snow and occasionally rendered inaudible by an avalanche. Recommended.
