Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt's blendings of tight Jazz Messengers-like themes with the free flow of Miles Davis's second great quintet are documented by annual spring releases for New York's High Note label. The first, 2010's Men of Honour, was a tasty acoustic set featuring saxophonist J.D. Allen, his most recent, last year's fiery Live in Paris, upped the electronics and zig-zagged between hip-hop and swing. His latest release, a commission for the Festival of New Trumpet Music, smooths the grooves with layers of guitar, vibraphone and effects. The initial inspiration was sculpture displayed at the Musée Rodin, Paris. ‘LAppel Aux Armes’ is brought to life as a slow burn from solo piano to triumphant trumpet high, ‘Dignity and Despair (Burghers of Calais)’ and ‘I Sol Tace (Gates of Hell)’ are captured with spacious rhythms and sustained trumpet blasts and the gentle undulations of ‘Epilogue’, an imagining of what Rodin would sculpt today, follow the brief and winsome ‘Camille Claudel’. Pelt's tonal control and sharp-suited lines stand out, and band mainstays, pianist Victor Gould and bassist Vincente Archer, are equally assured. Newcomers Chien Chien Lu on vibes and marimba and guitarist Alex Winz also put in a solid shift. And Pelt's assured score fleshes out harmonies without the added layers getting in the way of the pulse. The album is rounded out with the band paired back to an acoustic trumpet and vibes quintet. Lu channels his inner Bobby Hutcherson on the two-chord vamp ‘Ceramic’, ‘Watercolours’ is subtle and light and ‘Feito’ digs into up-tempo swing. The album ends with the imperious Pelt spinning melodies on the timeless vibe of a late-night head-nodder.
