This is the second set of originals saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi recorded in Massachusetts, with his Danish rhythm section, in March 2015. As on the album Dog Star, trumpeter Phil Grenadier joins the frontline and the relationship between Bergonzi and pianist Carl Winther is close. The album is themed on concepts that, according to sleeve notes, are common to Hinduism, the ancient texts of the Catholic Church, New Age teachings and more. Bergonzi captures the various personalities that each ‘ray’ is said to represent with expertly crafted themes and harmonic structures that the band can get their teeth into. The wayward influence of Wayne Shorter is clear in the hints of wisp in Bergonzi's tone, and the oblique shapes that some compositions take. ‘4th: Ray Harmony’ is an ethereal beauty that hovers above ballad tempo and the pulse of the final ‘Sun Worship Ritual’ borders on the free. But the Shorter aesthetic is only one of many strands that Bergonzi pulls together into a personal style. The twisty theme of ‘1st: Ray Intention’ zips along at speed, the tricky ‘5th: Ray Knowledge’ unfolds in logical steps and ‘6th: Ray Devotion” references modal modern jazz Grenadier and the sensitive Winther are able support, but it is Bergonzi's sound, flawless technique and grounded imagination that make the album stand out.
