Nussbaum knows a thing or three about playing with fusioneer guitar men: just ask Messers Scofield and Abercrombie. Migration captures the threesome in classic organ/guitar trio mode. ‘Counter Fury’ kicks in with typically enigmatic Larry Young style organ chords, before morphing into the gentle mysteries of the title track, cushioned on Nussbaum’s rolling toms. By contrast, ‘Brother Charles’ is a fiery groover with an extended Kontrafouris solo and Nussbaum restless and driven beneath the long lines of the soloists. As a trio this is a band that’s happy to keep it tight and simple, with a deep sense of groove, but they can also rustle up a Frisellian charm as on the blues lullaby ‘Sco Away’. They’re not going to re-write jazz history, but for a satisfying listen, salted with a little soul and a lot fun, this modest release has virtues aplenty to enjoy that sets it apart from louder, more ambitious but less accomplished contemporaries.
