We're used to hearing guitar supremo Mullen in small groups, often with organ at their heart. This time he's chosen a larger ensemble, the music all arranged by Lockrane. In fact, it's the flautist himself who impresses first, his boppish flute-guitar juxtapositions and solo playing kicking-off Mullen's very lively original ‘Medication’, before Mullen thumbs a lift through the changes. With just three non-Mullen pieces from nine, it's his sprightly pieces that dominate, with Lockrane's arrangements, each skillfully voiced, allowing plenty of space for the array of soloists on hand. Mullen leads off on ‘When I Fall in Love’, Lockrane's West Coast-ish writing for the nonet zig-zagging around the melody, ahead of Fishwick's cascading attack and Mullen's plangent solo. Mullen's album it may be, but improvisatory democracy applies and he takes his place among his fellow stars. ‘Spare Change’ has a laidback feel, Williams bluesily eloquent, the leader relaxed as Siegel makes his mark. Lockrane leads off ‘Spring Is Here’ over a latin pulse, Mullen bubbling through before the flautist again weaves his unique spell. There's commendable variety here. Lockrane and company have created a distinctive showcase for Mullen, one he evidently relishes Refreshingly different to his usual modus operandi.
