Atlanta may have a less iconic status than Woodstock and the Isle Of Wight in the canon of Mr Midnight Lightning's gigs but, as this double CD release shows, Seattle's favourite son was nonetheless on fire at this happy hippie bonanza. With a trio comprising the key foundations of both the Experience and Band Of Gypyies – Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass – Hendrix runs through the repertoire that largely made him rock's most soulful modernist. ‘Foxey Lady’, ‘Fire’ and ‘Purple Haze’ all sound as vibrant as ever but it is the way the music stretches the blues modelling clay whence it was born into stridently jazzy territory and an undefined space in between that makes it so compelling. To hear Hendrix drop in a quote of ‘The Breeze And I’ mid-set is to indeed wonder what Art Blakey and Wayne Shorter, who'd been dressing the very same tune in very different clothes, would have thought had they been baking in the sun with the other flower children that day. Indeed had Shorter's former boss Miles Davis been present chances are he would have been even more excited at the prospect of trading licks with a Hendrix in an obvious state of creative ascension. A tantalising look back at a future that sadly never came to pass.
