The partnership of Jimmy Giuffre and Jim Hall is one often overlooked, but from 1956 until 1960, together they recorded many landmark albums including The Train And The River and partnered Bob Brookmeyer on Trav'lin' Light, The Western Suite and the multi-tracked Four Brothers Sound. These location recordings taped at both New York's Five Spot and at the Paris L'Olympia may well feature Giuffre's familiar wistful folksy clarinet, but half of the Five Spot set sees Giuffre on tenor (‘The Crab’, ‘Wee See’, etc) now vigorously exploring the paths set out by Coltrane and Rollins rather than his hitherto preference for Prez. But then, the two Jims were always at the cutting edge and more than capable of kicking up plenty of dust as both versions of ‘Two For Timbuctu’ drive home. And, the passing years haven't in any way drained the music of its vitality.
