Although personal tragedy has been the background to many an artistic statement, few could conceivably match the devastatingly cruel fate that befell saxophonist Greene. He lost his six year-old daughter Ana in the mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, and, understandably, took considerable time to come to terms with the event. As he puts it himself, this music was written as his ‘focus gradually shifted from inward to outward.’ Focus is indeed the key word and it is to Greene's credit that, despite the expectedly gentle, meditative nature of the material, the whole performance centres resolutely on deep sentiment rather than sentimentality. Largely in ballad mode, with a rich undercurrent of Afro-Latin rhythms, swing and gospel, the compositions have an unforced grace, above all when the vocalists, none more so than Latanya Farrell, are featured. The presence of star soloists such as Pat Metheny and Kenny Barron lends undeniable gravitas to the work but Greene himself, particularly on soprano, brings the right degree of sensitivity and flourish to a work that duly celebrates innocence rather than dwelling on loss.
