It only takes a couple of choruses of ‘For Minor's Only’ to realise that this is going to be a classic sax and rhythm recording date. Jimmy Heath is of the same generation as Dexter Gordon and shares that saxophonist's confident articulation and clear melodic line. And like Gordon, he is a modernist with roots in swing with a great technique and strong narrative drive. Add in a light-shaded tone that is recognisably his own and it is particularly surprising that this was his first quartet date in what was then a 30-year career. Here, he is teamed with a rhythm section that is equally on the money. Barry Harris adds soulful inflections to a core Bud Powell aesthetic, bassist Sam Jones is firm in the holding role and Billy Higgins chatters on snare while driving the band with an urgent sense of swing. Apart from the ballad ‘Body and Soul’, all the tracks are Heath originals. The title is puckish and slightly tongue in cheek, ‘Bruh'Slim’ switches from latin to swing and the often-recorded ‘CTA’ is played at a boppish medium tempo bounce. Heath switches to soprano for the opening chorus of the ballad and stays there for the blues ‘All Members’. Jazz had moved on by the time this album was recorded, but this release proves that fresh things can be said, even with well-established practices.
