In 1963 Mod London the epitome of cool was to be seen around town with a bunch of Blue Note releases, but more so Jimmy McGriff's Sue label album I've Got A Woman firmly tucked under the arm of one's Madras cotton jacket. This was the floor-filling album that kick-started McGriff's career, while the title-track made the upper reaches of the singles charts. Tutored by Jimmy Smith and Milt Buckner, and a cousin to Benny Golson and Harold Melvin, McGriff chose not to follow the then-fashionable approach of playing hard bop horn-lines, but to explore a more majestic blues groove that proved jukebox friendly with club hits that included ‘All About My Girl’ and ‘That's The Way I Feel'. However, to both hedge his bets and demonstrate his versatility, McGriff also included the more mainstream ‘On The Street Where You Live’, ‘Teach Me Tonight’ and ‘Moonlight In Vermont’ in the mix.
