It would be interesting to know if the work of Australian composer Dale Cornelius has crossed the horizons of either Kühn or Smoczyński, since there are elements of his work that find echoes in this well-crafted release. Comprising mainly Kühn compositions, the pianist tempers his natural flair and exuberance to create a mutually compatible context that allows each musician to probe deeply into the melodic aspects of improvisation. The premise of the album is that the European classical tradition, from which both musicians have emerged, can come alive through the expressive possibilities of jazz improvisation. While each of the nine compositions begin in a manner suggestive of a formal recital, they develop with an ease into the improv where sometimes the pre-arranged blurs into the improvised and vice versa to create a series of performances that seem complete in themselves, where nothing needs to be added or taken away for fear of destroying the symmetry of the whole.
