Between 1995 and 2000, Kühn played 16 duo concerts with Ornette Coleman, plus recorded Colors: Live from Leipzig in 1996. Coleman was not especially fond of piano accompaniment, but was drawn to Kühn’s playing, making an honourable exception to his rule. The pianist describes how Coleman would write entirely new material for their concert performances, with Kühn contributing the harmonies. Once the concert was over, neither ever performed the music again. However, Kühn retained the lead sheets and, from the 170 or so they had performed together, selected 11 for this album, which also includes ‘Lonely Woman’ in two versions, plus a heartfelt seven-minute dedication to Coleman by the pianist. Throughout, Kühn, who was 73 when this album was recorded, plumbs what seems like a bottomless well of ideas. His fingering is precise and well-articulated, his harmonies, often angular and unexpected, lending an edge to his creativity that is compelling. Whatever the mood of the song, Kühn enters it completely, be it playful – ‘Love is Not Generous, Sex Belongs to Woman’, bluesy – ‘Lost Thoughts’, melancholic – ‘Somewhere’ or howling at the moon on his own tribute to Coleman, ‘The End of the World’.
