The trumpet-guitar-bass line-up inevitably recalls the Chet Baker trios of his later years, and the 25-year-old Sauqué looks recognisably soulful on the cover of this debut album. Melodically and rhythmically, he also sounds like a player of an earlier generation, although mention in the notes of the great Art Farmer is perhaps nearer the mark.
Sauqué's fellow Catalan, guitarist Traver, is equally inventive and laid-back, while it's bassist Campisi (Sicilian-born, based in Barcelona) whose propulsive backing provides the motor for the others’ solo work. Interestingly, the repertoire is not merely retro but creatively so – several unfashionable old standards sit alongside 1950s compositions (two by Gigi Gryce and ‘Bitty Ditty’ by Thad Jones) while among the rest are Mary Lou Williams's ‘In The Land Of Oobla-Dee’ and two never-before-covered Tadd Dameron obscurities. With track times varying from 60 seconds to four-and-a-half minutes, the players’ input ensures the results never sound anything except brand new.
