Ushering you into a magical soundworld that references everything from the Third Stream stylings of Chick Corea and Gary Burton's Lyric Suite for Sextet to the songs of Kurt Weill, with all points in between, Gardens In My Mind is an album full of beautifully crafted pieces that all make an indelible impression. Completely enveloping Wallfisch's pure-toned vocal lines, Dan Tepfer's varicoloured pianism and the lovingly wrought string parts of the Sacconi Quartet combine to produce textures that beguile and delight the ear. Anyone who has heard the London-born, Brooklyn-based Wallfisch's previous release, The Origin of Absolute Things, will be familiar with half of the disc's repertoire – seven songs are reprised here – but these expanded arrangements serve to cast the material in a new light. From the swooning opener ‘Moons Of Jupiter’, which suddenly erupts in a volcanic coda, to the misfiring quotes of Beethoven's Für Elise woven into ‘Brighton Beach’ and the immobile reverie of ‘Patience’, Wallfisch proves herself to be especially adept at limning different emotional states. You might be forgiven for thinking that the album's two covers, Joni Mitchell's ‘All I Want’ and Tim Buckley's ‘Song To The Siren’ would be in danger of sticking out, but both are subsumed so completely into the album's soundworld that they could have been penned especially for the date.
