This was the remarkably assured solo debut of the often-neglected pianist who had worked regularly for both Art Blakey and Joe Henderson, and was soon to join Stan Getz. (The album’s arrival on Candid dates from the company’s purchase of the 1970s label Choice, which originally taped this and much other interesting stuff.) Now in her mid-80s, Brackeen was always highly energetic and inventive in channelling her love of McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea – both name-checked in the enthusiastic liner notes by Marian McPartland.
Apart from one song-standard and a series of four originals, her surprising choices for the two opening tracks were Wayne Shorter’s ‘Nefertiti’ and Miles’ ‘Circles’ from the latter’s late-1960s albums. Naturally, her choice of McBee and Hart pays off in their propulsive contributions, nowhere more so than in the up-tempo 12-bar blues ‘C-SRI’. Elsewhere, she can fixate on the rhythm of ‘Sixate’ (that’s her spelling!) which is also used for the closing title-track and, whether you’re as aware as you should be of Brackeen, you’re likely to be blown away by this early example of her work.
